The beginnings of settlement in the upper Wisła valley

The first records of the settlement of Wisła date from the early 17th century, and the Komora urbarium of 1621 lists data on the village. The village belonged to the estates of the Dukes of Cieszyn, administered by the Cieszyn Chamber, and its first settlers were woodcutters and farmers. After 1653 the locality became hereditary property of the Habsburgs, and the Austrian aristocracy organised many hunts in the Wisła forests and built wooden forester lodges for them. Until the end of the 19th century the settlement was typically pastoral.

Growth of the summer resort

The arrival of Bogumił Hoff (1829–1894), a geographer and ethnographer, and his article "Wycieczka do źródeł Wisły" in "Tygodnik Ilustrowany" in 1885 helped establish Wisła as a summer resort. The influx of tourists markedly accelerated development: guesthouses and mountain huts appeared and many trails were marked out. In 1897–1898 a hunting lodge was built on Przysłop and in 1924–1925 adapted as a hut of the Upper Silesian Branch of the Polish Tatra Society. In 1907 a larch-wood hunting lodge was built on Zadni Groń; it burned down on 23 December 1927. Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz (1883–1948) designed the new residence free of charge; President Ignacy Mościcki made his first visit there on 21 January 1931. In 1955 Wisła was raised to the rank of a settlement, and in 1962 it received town rights.

The Lutheran church and the Patent of Toleration

The Patent of Toleration of 13 October 1781 allowed Lutherans to build prayer houses. The Lutherans of Wisła obtained permission to build on 12 April 1782, the cornerstone was laid on 18 June of that year, and the prayer house was ready in the autumn of 1782. The masonry church was designed in 1833 by Edward Korber; its cornerstone was laid on 29 June 1833. Construction was interrupted by a collapse: on 24 August 1835 two main pillars fell. The church was consecrated on 29 June 1838. The tower, possible only after the Protestant Patent of 8 April 1861, was dedicated on 29 January 1863; with the cross it stands 45 metres tall. After the fire of 8 June 1885 the rebuilt tower was dedicated on 29 June 1886.
